P is for Moolah

An interesting profile I read recently (though it came out months earlier) in the NY Times Sunday magazine about mega-big author James Patterson.

I've not read any Patterson. Has anyone else? How is he as a page turner?

  1. I listened to a couple of his books some time ago and found them adequate for passing some spare time. I'm all for it, though, if he writes another Alex Cross book which is successful enough to give us another Morgan Freeman movie.
It's a turn off to me as a reader to hear about an author enamored of the publishing business. I'd rather hear him wax eloquently about words and sentences. At least he says he's still interested in conveying a good story.
Probably not fair to be so harsh on him as I read lots of popular fiction. See my earlier comment about The Scarpetta Factor. Authors like Patterson keep the bestseller list turning. He seemingly does it almost single-handedly!

  2. I think the piece accomplished both. He talked some about the writing - but in this case, it seems like he's not going to wax eloquently, that he considers himself perfectly fine but not classic. And he behind-the-scenes look at what it means to be an industry like James Patterson is kinda fascinating. The guy sells more books in a year than King and Dan Brown combined? Amazing.
